Today, I want to share what makes our Egyptian Fayoumi chickens so special and why they are the perfect addition to our southwest farm.
Egyptian Fayoumi chickens are a heritage breed originating from the Fayoum region of Egypt. They have been around for centuries, prized for their resilience and adaptability to hot climates. Although in the United States, they are considered a rare breed, these birds are practically built for our desert climate.

These chickens are known for being incredibly hardy. They handle heat well, resist many common poultry diseases, and are excellent foragers. This means they can thrive on a natural diet, helping us maintain a sustainable and organic setup without relying heavily on commercial feed. They’re small to medium-sized which makes them perfect for our chicken tractors.
Our decision to raise Egyptian Fayoumi chickens was driven by their exceptional alignment with our vision for a thriving, sustainable, and entirely organic farm. Our birds possess natural foraging abilities that prove invaluable in controlling pests and weeds, significantly reducing the necessity for harmful chemical interventions and minimizing the amount of time spent on tedious tasks like mowing – a truly substantial advantage for our farm's ecosystem and our own well-being! Furthermore, their remarkable adaptability to our region's challenging, dry, and hot southwestern climate makes them an exceptionally low-maintenance and practical choice for our unique environment, allowing us to focus on other essential aspects of farm management.

We are committed to raising our Egyptian Fayoumi chickens and continuing to leverage their beneficial contributions in caring for our land. In fact, we are incredibly excited to share that we recently experienced the joy of successfully hatching our first incubated chick approximately one week ago, and we are pleased to report that it is thriving and developing healthily.
